11 Plus Exam Revision Papers
Exam papers are essential for an effective eleven plus revision process but they need to be used in the right way. It is not the case that children who have done full preparation will improve by doing paper after paper. In fact, for many children just doing lots of papers will be counter-productive.
Papers should be used to keep children up to speed, papers should be used to aid accurate working, papers should be used to gap fill knowledge.
Once you have reviewed the revision papers you can see our suggested detailed six week 11 plus revision plan. This can be expanded if you have more time.
Structured Courses or Papers
Some children will have done a very full preparation and so all they will really need are some papers to keep things going. We list suggested revision papers below for both GL and then CEM. If however, you want to mix a good dose of papers with some wider revision to improve skills, then structured courses are an excellent way to do this. We recommend those provided by Learning Street:
- For GL – Learning Street revision Course ( GL)
- For CEM – Learning Street revision Course ( CEM)
If you decide to use these take care as they are intensive and there is a great deal of content there, in some cases you may be better off allowing six weeks to complete them rather than the stated four weeks they suggest.
Recommended Revision Papers:
For children doing school written exams or exams from a governing body (e.g. CSSE or Kent)
In some cases independent schools or some grammar school governing bodies (e.g. CSSE) will produce sample papers, but it would be rare to find enough or papers covering every topic for the purposes of revision. We’d suggest that you these in addition or to replace one or more of the papers you do as part of the revision process. Don’t get too caught up with the differences in styles.

In addition for the Verbal Reasoning exam we’d suggest that children do a little work each day. The best book to use for this is:
CGP Verbal Reasoning the 10 minute tests
For CEM 11 plus revision the papers you should be using are as above BUT with the following amendments.
Instead of using the CGP Verbal Reasoning 10 minute tests book (above) you should use the CEM version of it:
CGP Verbal Reasoning 10 minute tests for CEM exams
CEM exams feature very similar Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths (numerical reasoning) content to other exams. The tests will combine the disciplines into two papers (with a mix of subjects). It will be useful for children to get familiar with this. You can either choose to do the work above (all needed ) and then in addition some CEM style test papers or just switch to doing CEM style test papers. Ideally, we’d suggest in each week doing what we suggest AND one CEM test paper then you’ll have the best of both worlds.
The CEM test papers we suggest using are noted below. Each pack contains four papers. We’d suggest starting by buying only one pack.
