11 Plus Exams – Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning historically consisted of word puzzles and this evolved over time into the now infamous 21 different Verbal Reasoning question types which are normally tested through papers designed and produced by an educational publisher called GL (NFER).

Recently however a new test publisher called CEM (Durham University Centre of Evaluation and Monitoring) has emerged. CEM call their test Verbal Reasoning but it is for the most part entirely different from the historic GL test.

Care should be taken to understand which test your child may sit.

One thing both tests have in common is that regardless of how much work children do on test papers or understanding how to tackle different questions types, children will only improve if they actively develop their vocabulary and spelling skills. Children won’t make progress beyond a certain level without a wide vocabulary.

VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE CENTRAL TO ANY PREPARATION REGIME FOR VERBAL REASONING.
