What are the chances of success in the 11 Plus ?

This is the answer every parent wants an answer to, of course it’s not possible to predict what will happen but there are some indicators of how close a child could come to getting the place they want through the 11 Plus.

“How can I find out what my child’s 11 Plus chances are ?”

You’ll never be able to find out what your child’s chances are. If they are heading for a level 5 in their year six SATS then that’s a good start, if they are in area with more Grammar Schools then their chances will be higher, if they read every day and have a wide vocabulary then that will help them. Very often though how a child prepares and if they can perform to their full potential on the day will have more effect than their inate ability. Go to Grammar School Areas and select your area to find out some more statistics about applicant numbers vs places in your area.

In some areas like Kent provision of Grammar School places is full. In essence this means that the top 25% will get a place. To put that into perspective, if your child is in the top 3 or 4 in their class in a well regarded primary school then they will have a good chance of success.

Remember though that in many areas competition is more intense and in some there are so many children who could get through that it all comes down to how well a child does on the day.

If your child is recognised as being very bright in their primary school please do remember that it is still worth doing some preparation with them to ensure they know what to expect on the day. This is especially true with Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
